Laurie’s Vision for the 91st

My Priorities:

Safe and Affordable Housing

Everyone deserves safe, dignified, and affordable housing. As an at-large councilperson, I have spent the last 2.5 years working with colleagues on housing legislation to improve the lives of renters. From ensuring a functional and compliant Fair Rent Commission to recognizing the rights of tenants to organize, I have made positive changes in Hamden. I am also currently working on a rental registry program to coincide with the town’s new housing department. At the state level, I plan to continue this work and champion further protections such as Just Cause Evictions.

Vital Services

The pandemic vividly illustrated the gaps in the services that support families and working people, and we must ensure and expand access for people across the state. Since I was a birth doula, I understand how important it is to connect people to vital services. As an elected official, I am accessible and responsive to a variety of constituent concerns. I work tirelessly to find solutions. As your next state representative, my background and experience will inform my style of legislating and public service.

Environment

As the former chair of the Sustainability committee, I have worked on developing stronger communication between the Council and our 7 environmental boards and commissions, which culminated in a Sustainability Symposium last March. As a result, the town is investing in a composter to make Hamden greener. I’ve enjoyed working with the Hamden Alliance for Trees to plant more trees in South Hamden. Additionally, I have volunteered with the 6 Lakes Park Coalition Steering Committee where I have helped two major meetings with residents and DEEP. At the state level, I will advocate for 6 Lakes to be remediated and turned into a state park. The residents of South Hamden deserve more protected green spaces.
